Sermon Summary · Romans, Part 11 Romans 3:27–31 ESV

No Place for Pride

Clark Beck · September 6, 2026 Previously: “The Gift of Grace” (Romans 3:21–26)
Main Idea

There is no place for pride in the heart of the justified.

The Primary Text · Romans 3:27–31

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Pride vs. Faith

Faith
Believing God’s word is true, trusting Christ for your justification, and living from that trust.

Pride
Doubting God’s word, trusting your own mind and works to justify yourself, living by what you think best.

Application

  1. 01Assume the pride problem. Paul’s rhetorical question takes it for granted. Unchecked pride meets God’s resistance and stops the flow of grace (1 Peter 5:5).
  2. 02Attack pride with faith. You don’t become humble by deciding to be. You become humble by living for God’s glory by faith.
  3. 03Issues that point to pride. No time for the Word or prayer; fighting sin alone by trying harder; comparing your output; identity in what you do for God; rejecting counsel; ingratitude and criticism.
  4. 04Faith brings down the barriers between people. Because God is one, there’s no boasting in race, nation, or class. Don’t let those lines keep you from fellowship (Ephesians 2:11–19).
  5. 05Boast only in the cross. If you’re boasting in anything but Christ, put to death the pride he already killed (Galatians 6:14).
  6. 06Obey by faith. Watch the staircase, not the yo-yo: confess, receive grace, and walk forward — the Spirit is taking you higher.
